Beattie wants Gillingham job

James Beattie has confirmed that he has applied for the vacant managerial post at Gillingham.

The League One strugglers have been without a permanent boss since Peter Taylor was relieved of his duties late last month.

A number of candidates have been linked with the job, including former Chelsea midfielder Dennis Wise, but Beattie has revealed that he has thrown his hat into the ring.

"I've applied for the Gillingham job [and I'm] just waiting to hear back now," he told BBC Radio 4.

Beattie, who made five appearances for England, has been out of work since he left Accrington Stanley by mutual consent in September 2014.
