On this day: Andrei Kanchelskis runs riot at Ewood Park

Nineteen years ago today, Andrei Kanchelskis shone as Everton defeated 10-man Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at Ewood Park.

Andrei Kanchelskis's stint with Everton may have been brief, but the Russian still produced plenty of memorable moments.

It was somewhat of a surprise when Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson decided to part with the winger in the summer of 1995, but the Toffees, who shelled out £5m, certainly benefited.

Early in his Goodison Park career Kanchelskis was sidelined by a dislocated shoulder, which was ironically suffered in an encounter against his former employers.

However, once fully recovered, he went on to prove himself to be one of the Premier League's best widemen, scoring 16 goals in the process. It was a haul that included a brace away at bitter rivals Liverpool.

He scored a further two goals during Everton's trip to Blackburn Rovers 19 years ago today, although in the opening exchanges at Ewood Park, it was Gary Flitcroft that was the main focus.

The Blackburn midfielder appeared to lead with an elbow as he challenged Tony Grant and despite there being just three minutes on the clock, he was handed his marching orders by referee Jeff Winter.

Even with the numerical advantage, it took the visiting Toffees until the 71st minute to break the deadlock.

Andy Hinchcliffe's corner was flicked on by Duncan Ferguson into the path of Daniel Amokachi, who powered a half-volley in from close range.

After that, Kanchelskis took centre stage. His first and Everton's second goal of the afternoon came when he found the far corner of Tim Flowers's net from a tight angle.

Then, in the final minute, he raced clear of the Blackburn defence, before chipping the ball out of Flowers's reach.

Speaking after the final whistle, Everton boss Joe Royle said of his summer signing: "He's been tremendous. He's in double figures even after missing the first third of the season, which is a tremendous feat.

"They had to chase the game a bit in the second half and their full-back kept getting isolated. Nobody in the world can afford to be isolated with Andrei."
