Southgate: 'Kane leads from the front'

England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted that he was "impressed" by Harry Kane's latest audition for the role of full-time captain.

The in-form Tottenham Hotspur striker extended his scoring run with the only goal of the game against Lithuania, netting from the penalty spot 27 minutes in.

Kane has worn the armband in both of the Three Lions' fixtures this month, scoring the winning goal on each occasion to help his side cruise through to the World Cup finals.

Southgate has yet to appoint a permanent skipper ahead of next summer's tournament, but he is happy with the leadership qualities shown by his leading man.

"I think it's important that he is scoring and leading from the front," he told ITV Sport. "We need that leadership and he has certainly impressed me with everything he has done."

Jordan Henderson and Gary Cahill, the latter of whom sat out the win over Lithuania, are understood to be the other candidates to replace Wayne Rooney as captain.
