Roy Hodgson relieved with England's World Cup qualification

Hodgson relieved with WC qualification

England manager Roy Hodgson has expressed his relief at his side's 2-0 victory over Poland at Wembley on Tuesday.

Wayne Rooney's goal in the first half and Steven Gerrard's strike in the 88th minute proved enough for the Three Lions to win World Cup qualifying Group H and book their place in next year's tournament in Brazil.

"That second goal took about 10 years off both of our lives," BBC Sport quotes him as saying. "And I need it more than Ray Lewington!

"I'm greatly satisfied. It was a tough group, both Montenegro and Poland showed themselves to be great opponents both home and away.

"We played some sensational football in the first half and we dug in very well and controlled them in the second. We always said that if we could get to the last two games, we'd be stronger and have players coming back."

England beat Montenegro 4-1 at Wembley on Friday.
