Italy's Lorenzo Insigne scores an 80th-minute free kick to beat England 1-0 in their opening match of the Under-21 Euro 2013.

Lorenzo Insigne's 80th-minute free kick secured a 1-0 win for Italy against England in their opening match of the Under-21 Euro 2013 this evening.

Both teams sought to attack in the opening exchanges, and Italy's Ciro Immobile dragged his shot just wide of Jack Butland's post with the game's first clear-cut chance.

England continued to defend resolutely as the half wore on, and passed the 14-hour mark without conceding a goal as half time approached.

England thought they had taken the lead just after the break, as Craig Dawson rose highest to head home a corner in the 49th minute, but after much confusion, the goal was disallowed.

Italy continued much in the same vein as the first half, but were restricted to half-chances for the majority of the second period as England defended resolutely.

However, with just 10 minutes remaining, Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne curled a free kick around the wall and beyond the reach of Butland to put his side ahead.

England skipper Jordan Henderson came close to equalising with almost the last kick of the game, but Francesco Bardi made a sprawling save to ensure Italy went away with all three points.
