Wayne Rooney praises Raheem Sterling performance

Wayne Rooney says that Raheem Sterling deserved the man of the match award in their 1-0 win against Norway.

New England captain Wayne Rooney said that Raheem Sterling's man of the match award in their 1-0 win against Norway on Wednesday evening was fully deserved.

Rooney netted from the penalty spot in the second half, and Sterling was the game's outstanding performer in an otherwise tepid friendly at Wembley.

The Three Lions skipper told ITV Sport that the Liverpool teenager was the right man for their award.

He said: "He's a threat, he takes the ball and he gets at players. It doesn't always come off, but he's an exciting player. He makes things happen and it's great to play with him.

"I thought I could've done better, and we all could have so it's a night where it's important we got the victory, first game after the World Cup, and now we go into Monday.

"It's always nervous when you're taking a penalty, but I was always confident I was going to score. I knew which corner I was going before the game."

Roy Hodgson's side play Switzerland in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Monday.
