Report: Wayne Rooney to be appointed England captain

Report: Rooney to become England captain

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is reportedly expected to be named as the new England captain if and when Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard walk away from international duty.

The 28-year-old has captained the Three Lions before, but the armband currently belongs to Gerrard, who has revealed that he will consider his England future this summer.

Lampard, who is deputy skipper, is also unclear on whether to continue with his international commitments as he considers his next move after leaving Chelsea this summer.

According to the Daily Star, Rooney has told manager Roy Hodgson that he would be honoured to become captain of his national side.

The United forward was heavily scrutinised during England's World Cup campaign, which ended with the Three Lions at the bottom of Group D, taking just one point.
