Mark Hughes: 'Jack Butland's England recognition deserved'

Mark Hughes says that it was "great" to see Jack Butland earn another England cap earlier this week following an impressive start to the season with Stoke City.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has admitted that he is pleased to have seen Jack Butland rewarded for his "fantastic" club form by earning a rare England appearance.

The 22-year-old started in goal for a much-changed Three Lions side in their 3-0 win over Lithuania on Monday night.

It was just a second England cap for Butland, and a first in three years, but Hughes believes that it was fully deserved after a string of impressive displays since taking over as the Potters' No.1 this season.

"He's been fantastic for us and it was great to see him recognised internationally by Roy Hodgson," the Welshman told reporters. "He deserved the chance to shine."

Butland spoke earlier this week about ousting first-choice keeper Joe Hart at international level in the coming months.
