Roy Hodgson explains his making Frank Lampard the England captain before giving the duty to Ashley Cole.

England manager Roy Hodgson has explained his U-turn regarding his side's captaincy for Wednesday's friendly with the Republic of Ireland.

The 65-year-old has initially unveiled Frank Lampard as the Three Lions skipper with Ashley Cole leading the team out at Wembley, only for the latter to be given the armband shortly after.

However, after discussions with his players Hodgson finally revealed that they were all in agreement for Cole to be named captain for the night.

"After speaking to Frank and sounding out the other members of the squad, everyone thought it was would be nice if [Cole] had the armband on and led the team out," Hodgson told Sky Sports News.

"Frank was happy to hand over that honour because we all believe he deserves it; he's been a fantastic servant not only to Chelsea and Arsenal but England too."

Cole will make his 102nd England appearance during the match.
