John Barnes believes that England lack the quality in their side to compete with the best teams in the world.

Former England international John Barnes believes that the Three Lions' lack of top players will see them struggle in major tournaments.

The former Liverpool midfielder feels that there are not enough players in Roy Hodgson's squad plying their trade with teams that play in the Champions League.

Barnes said: "Roy Hodgson no longer has the players. Compare this team to five years ago with the so-called 'golden era'.

"The Beckhams, Gerrards, Lampards, Coles and Owens were playing at the highest level for the top teams in England.

"Now the team is made of players not playing for the top clubs in England. That is going to work against the national team."

England drew 2-2 with Brazil on Sunday at the Maracana Stadium as Wayne Rooney and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain almost handed them a famous victory.
