John Barnes believes that the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain need first-team football in order to perform well for England.

Former Liverpool and England midfielder John Barnes believes that the younger players within the Three Lions set-up will not be able to thrive without first-team football at club level.

The 48-year-old has drawn on Arsenal duo Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who are not regular starters for the Gunners but are deemed as the future for the national side.

"If you look at players such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, players England are looking towards for the future, they are not regulars for their club sides," Barnes told BBC Radio Five Live. "The top young German players are getting regular games for their clubs."

Roy Hodgson's side were knocked out of Euro 2012 last night after losing 4-2 on penalties against Italy.
