Kansas cruise past 10-man Columbus Crew

Fourth-placed Sporting Kansas City have claimed a 2-0 victory over 10-man Columbus Crew to deny the club from climbing to the top of the MLS table this evening.

Home side Kansas took the lead after only 10 minutes when Jacob Peterson hammered the ball home from close range to put his side 1-0 up.

Seth Sinovic almost doubled City's lead after 34 minutes when he crashed in an effort from distance, however it was palmed away from the bottom corner by the Columbus keeper.

The hosts continued to apply pressure in the second half and it nearly paid off when Dominic Dwyer opened up with a chance on goal, though he could only drill his effort wide.

Columbus thought they'd grabbed a vital equaliser with 25 minutes to play, but Federico Higuain saw his low shot well saved.

The visitors' chances of taking a point from the tie were dealt a major blow when Wil Trapp was shown a second yellow card after 83 minutes, leaving Kansas to edge out with all three points, as Claudio Bieler grabbed their second with an injury-time tap-in.
