New penalty shootout system to be used in Community Shield

New shootout system to be used in Community Shield

The Football Association has announced that the new 'ABBA' penalty shootout format will be used during Sunday's Community Shield match between Chelsea and Arsenal.

The Premier League champions will meet the FA Cup holders at Wembley this weekend in the traditional curtain-raiser for the new season.

If the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the two teams will go straight into a penalty shootout in which the new system will be trialled.

The 'ABBA' system is designed to make the shootout fairer on the team taking the second penalty, with that side taking another immediately after that before the opposition have their second spot kick.

"The FA has today announced that a different order of kicks for Kicks from the Penalty Mark (KFPM) will be trialled at Sunday's FA Community Shield supported by McDonald's - the first time the new format will be used competitively in the country," the FA said in a statement.

The new format will also be used across all English Football League tournaments this season.
