Roberto Di Matteo believes that Chelsea showed "great belief" to beat Wigan this afternoon.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has said that his side showed great belief to overcome a "difficult" Wigan Athletic side this afternoon.

Di Matteo's men took the lead just after the hour through defender Branislav Ivanovic. However, while Wigan's Mohamed Diame struck back with less than 10 minutes to go to tie the score, Juan Mata was on hand to grab the winner in stoppage time.

"I thought it was going to be difficult [at 1-1]," he told Sky Sports News. "Wigan defended well with a lot of men and kept the ball well as well. We needed a break.

"The team believed. We went forward with a lot of men and we managed to score the winner. It shows that there's good spirit, there's great belief.

"The tempo was slow, which worked well for Wigan. It's difficult to refocus after a Champions League game. I made a number of changes to freshen up the team but there was still a hangover."

Chelsea move back into fifth place in the Premier League following the win.
