Jamie Carragher: John Terry has been the best defender "by a mile" this season

Jamie Carragher insists that John Terry has been the best defender in the Premier League this season, claiming that he is miles ahead of his counterparts.

Jamie Carragher has claimed that John Terry has been the best defender "by a mile" in the Premier League this season.

The Chelsea skipper has played an integral part in his side's title win, acting as the foundation upon which Jose Mourinho has built a solid backline.

Carragher believes that the 34-year-old has been by far the best defender in the division.

"He's never had that pace – I wouldn't say he's better now, but his understanding of the game and reading of the game has come on," Carragher told Sky Sports News.

"Also Mourinho, for John Terry, is the perfect manager. The way he sets his teams up – he has [Cesar] Azpilicueta there, who's not the most adventurous of full-backs, he has [Nemanja] Matic in front of him.

"He needs that sort of protection because of his lack of mobility, but he makes up for it in other areas. He's been the best defender by a mile in this league."

Chelsea claimed the title by defeating Crystal Palace 1-0 at Stamford Bridge earlier today.
