Chelsea purchase of Kingsmeadow approved by AFC Wimbledon fans

AFC Wimbledon approve ground sale to Chelsea

Chelsea's proposed purchase of AFC Wimbledon stadium Kingsmeadow has been approved by fans of the League Two club.

The Dons Trust, who own the League Two club, held a vote on the proposal on Monday with 98% in favour of the sale.

The sale of the stadium is on the condition that AFC Wimbledon receive planning permission to build a new stadium in Merton.

"The successful vote on the stadium sale is an important milestone in helping to return AFC Wimbledon to its spiritual home in Merton," Dons Trust chairman Matthew Breach told reporters.

"There is still a lot of work to do to deliver a new stadium but the outcome of the vote shows the overwhelming support among the club's fans for having Wimbledon play where it belongs, back in Merton."

Chelsea intend to use the ground for reserve and youth team matches.
