The home side were ahead with only one minute on the clock. Eddy Bosnar received the ball and fired a shot in from just inside the Newcastle half with the help of a deflection.

Bernie Ibini-Isei then slammed the ball into the bottom corner from Mile Sterjovski's cross to double the home side's lead with just six minutes played.

However, the Jets stood firm after that and managed to pull one back through Joel Griffiths's close-range finish.

Liam Reddy then had to be at his best to deny David Carney, who had been played in by Adam Taggart, and Griffiths headed over with an hour played.

The Mariners pushed hard for a third goal, but Emile Heskey fired over for the Jets in the closing stages.

However, Glen Trifiro pounced on a loose ball to seal the game for the hosts.
