Reigning Europa League champions Aston Villa travel to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion in their opening game of the 2026-27 Premier League season on Sunday afternoon.
The two teams played out a seven-goal thriller in this exact fixture last season, with Ollie Watkins scoring twice to help Villa claim a 4-3 away victory.
Match preview
Brighton are gearing up for their 10th consecutive season as a Premier League club and have recorded back-to-back eighth-placed finishes under head coach Fabian Hurzeler, with last season’s efforts rewarded with a Conference League playoff spot.
The Seagulls enter this weekend’s domestic opener with minimal rest after travelling 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle to play out a goalless stalemate with Norwegian outfit Tromso in a first-leg tie on Thursday – a game in which they registered only six of their 25 shots on target.
Prior to that match, Brighton had plenty to smile about during pre-season as they won all four of their friendly fixtures against Wycombe, Strasbourg, Roma and Bologna, scoring 12 goals in the process.
Brighton did lose their final two Premier League games of last season, though (1-0 to Leeds and 3-0 to Man United), and they have not lost three in a row in the division since March 2022 under ex-manager Graham Potter (a run of six that included a home defeat to Aston Villa).
Since losing 3-1 to Chelsea on the opening weekend of the 2020-21 season, Brighton are unbeaten in each of their last five matchday one Premier League fixtures (W4 D1), their longest such run since going 10 consecutive seasons unbeaten between 1969-70 and 1978-79.
However, Brighton’s recent record against Villa leaves a lot to be desired, as they have lost 64% of their top-flight meetings with the Lions (nine out of 14 - W2 D3), while they have also dropped more points from winning positions against the Midlands club than they have versus any other PL team (13).
Aston Villa have established themselves as a certified member of English football's elite in recent seasons, with Unai Emery successfully steering the club back to Europe's top table after clinching Champions League qualification last term courtesy of a second fourth-placed finish in three years.
After breezing past Freiburg by a 3-0 scoreline in the Europa League final in May, Villa experienced mixed fortunes in pre-season, winning three and losing four of their seven friendly fixtures, while they also suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup just over a week ago.
Emery has also had to contend with the loss of some key first-team players this summer, including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne, but Villa have used the funds generated to sign seven new players, with more arrivals expected before the September 1 deadline.
The Midlands club head into Sunday’s contest keen to improve their matchday one record in the Premier League, as they have won just twice in seven attempts on the opening weekend since returning to the top tier in 2019-20 (D1 L4).
However, Villa can take confidence from the fact that they have won eight of their last 10 Premier League meetings with Brighton (D1 L1), while they have not lost any of their four top-flight matches against Hurzeler’s side (W3 D1), scoring 10 goals in the process.

Team News
Brighton will be without Yankuba Minteh (leg), Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Stefanos Tzimas (knee) and Evan Ferguson (ankle) due to injury, while Carlos Baleba (also sidelined with an ankle issue) is on the verge of joining Manchester United for a fee in excess of £65m.
Club-record signing Luka Vuskovic played the full 90 minutes against Tromso on Thursday along with Pascal Gross, Yasin Ayari, Matz Wieffer and Olivier Boscagli. All five players should be involved again on Sunday, but their minutes could be managed this time around.
Should Gross move into a deeper midfield position, that would allow Jack Hinshelwood to return in the number 10 role where he scored three goals in Brighton’s final five league games of last season.
Canadian striker Promise David joined the club earlier this week and is available to make his debut, though Georginio Rutter is set to lead the line.
As for Aston Villa, new signings Johan Manzambi (knee) and Joao Gomes (calf) have joined Brian Madjo (unspecified), Leon Bailey (muscle) and long-term absentee Amadou Onana (knee) in the treatment room.
Alejandro Garnacho (concussion) and Tammy Abraham (knock) will be assessed, while Ollie Watkins’s availability is up in the air amid interest from Al-Hilal, with Emery unable to guarantee the striker will stay during Friday’s press conference.
Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and defensive duo Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were all confirmed as new arrivals earlier this week and could make their debuts on Sunday, the former is the most likely to start between the sticks ahead of Emiliano Martinez.
Konsa’s £51m exit to Arsenal was finalised on Friday, so Pau Torres and Victor Lindelof could be the centre-back pairing chosen to start, while Matty Cash and Ian Maatsen are the most likely duo to begin as full-backs.
Brighton & Hove Albion possible starting lineup:
Verbruggen; Weiffer, Dunk, Vuskovic, Kadioglu; Ayari, Gross; Gomez, Hinshelwood, De Cuyper; Rutter
Aston Villa possible starting lineup:
Suzuki; Cash, Lindelof, Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, Hemmings; McGinn, Barkley, Buendia; Watkins
We say: Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 Aston Villa
Aston Villa’s strong head-to-head record against Brighton should provide them with plenty of confidence heading to the South Coast, but Emery must navigate this fixture after seeing the spine of his Europa League-winning side ripped apart during the summer transfer window.
The visitors should still field a competitive lineup against a fatigued Seagulls squad recovering from a long-distance Conference League qualifier in Norway. With that in mind, both side may have to settle for a share of the spoils.
