Brazil striker Fred announces international retirement

Fred retires from international football

Fred has retired from international football following Brazil's catastrophic exit from their own World Cup.

The 30-year-old striker was the subject of much criticism from Brazilian fans after the host nation's 7-1 semi-final defeat at the hands of Germany.

He has now announced his retirement from the international game after scoring 18 goals in 39 appearances for the Selecao.

Last year at the Confederations Cup, Fred, who plays for Fluminense, won the Silver Shoe award for scoring the most goals (five) as Brazil won the tournament.
