Result: Ryan Fraser, Callum Wilson both net in Bournemouth win

Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson score the goals as Bournemouth record a 2-0 win over Cardiff City at the Vitality Stadium.

Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson scored the goals as Bournemouth recorded a 2-0 win over Cardiff City at the Vitality Stadium on the opening weekend of the new Premier League campaign.

Wilson missed a first-half penalty for the Cherries, but a 24th-minute strike from Fraser and a late Wilson effort proved enough for the hosts to collect all three points against new boys Cardiff on Saturday afternoon.

Cardiff - last season's Championship runners-up - made a bright start to the clash at the Vitality Stadium, with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's pace causing problems in a wide position.

The number 19 broke down the left in the fourth minute before delivering towards the head of Bobby Reid, who was making his Cardiff debut following a summer move from Bristol City, but Bournemouth defender Steve Cook just about made the clearance.

Bournemouth's first chance of the match arrived in the 11th minute after Wilson had battled his way into a shooting position, but the striker's low attempt missed the near post.

The home side did make the breakthrough in the 24th minute, however, when Wilson found space in a wide position before delivering a low cross into Fraser, who smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Joshua King struck wide of the post in the spell of pressure that followed, with Cardiff struggling for possession during a difficult period of the match for the Welsh club.

Bournemouth had the chance to double their lead form the penalty spot in the 34th minute after Wilson had been challenged by Bruno Ecuele Manga, but Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge made a super stop to keep out Wilson's effort.

The away side's best chance of a leveller came in the final minutes of the first period when Joe Ralls picked out Mendez-Laing with a super cross, but the attacker just could not make proper contact at the far post.

Bournemouth continued to dominate the possession in the early stages of the second period, with Cardiff finding it increasingly difficult to gain a foothold in the match.

Callum Paterson had one deflected over the Bournemouth crossbar just before the hour, before Brooks somehow headed away from goal down the other end during an open period.

Cardiff had a golden chance to level in the 65th minute when Josh Murphy's overhead kick landed at the feet of Sean Morrison barely three yards from goal, but the centre-back got his feet mixed up.

Reid then fired a free kick over the Bournemouth crossbar in the 69th minute as Cardiff enjoyed easily their best spell of the match.

Wilson headed into the arms of Etheridge in the 79th minute as opportunities continued to arrive at both ends, and Bournemouth's lead remained slender heading for the latter stages.

Cardiff stayed in the match as the contest headed for additional time, but Wilson ensured that Bournemouth would run out opening-day winners when he struck a Simon Francis cross into the bottom corner in the 91st minute.

Next up for Bournemouth is a trip to West Ham United next weekend, while Cardiff will look to bounce back at home to Newcastle United.
