Gary Rowett hails "excellent" Clayton Donaldson after Wigan Athletic hat-trick

Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett praises Clayton Donaldson for his hat-trick during their Championship win over Wigan.

Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett has hailed Clayton Donaldson after the striker's hat-trick secured them a 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic.

Donaldson found the net three times at St Andrew's on Saturday as the Blues made it four victories from their last five games in the Championship.

Despite his exploits in front of goal, Rowett insists that the 30-year-old forward is also a "real team player".

"Clayton Donaldson always does so much for the team," he told BBC Sport. "His role is so pivotal to us and he does it brilliantly; working hard, holding the ball up, chasing things.

"He's a real team player and the way he took all three goals - each very different - was excellent."

Birmingham are up to 12th place in the Championship table following their win over the Latics.
