Arjen Robben: 'Criticism is unjustified'

Arjen Robben says that recent criticism thrown at him amounts to "personal warfare".

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has said that the recent criticism thrown at him amounts to "personal warfare".

The Dutch international has not had the best of campaigns for the Bavarian outfit, during which he has been plagued by a niggling groin injury.

The 28-year-old has also been criticised for being "selfish" by club legend Franz Beckenbauer.

However, Robben, who bagged a brace in the Netherlands' 3-2 win over England on Wednesday, has now suggested that the criticism levelled at him is "unjustified".

"I could say I don't care and I read or hear nothing, but you can't avoid it," said Robben. "It is not always fun, especially because in my opinion it is not justified. If I play badly, you may criticise me, but in Germany it is personal warfare."

Robben also took a shot at Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes, even hinting that the 66-year-old is stifling his progress at club level.

"It feels great to train and play with the Dutch again," he added. "It's been a tough time at the club, but then this feels like it is the way it should be.

"It might have something to do with working under a coach who has confidence in you and just tells you to feel free and play your game."

Robben has scored five goals in 14 appearances for the Bundesliga giants this season.
