Barnsley sack manager Jose Morais following the club's relegation from the Championship.

Barnsley have announced the departure of manager Jose Morais following the club's relegation from the Championship.

The Tykes fell to a 4-1 defeat at Derby County on the final day of the season to see their two-year stint in the second tier come to an end.

Morais took the reins at Oakwell in February following the departure of Paul Heckingbottom but has only won three games during his tenure.

Barnsley confirmed that Morais and assistants Dimas Teixeira and Joao Cunha all had a relegation clause in their contracts that has been triggered with immediate effect.

"The club acknowledges the disappointment of relegation and shares the view of supporters that this has been a disappointing season of results," read a statement on the Barnsley website.

"The aim is now to have a proactive summer both on and off the pitch, in order to gain promotion back to the Championship.

"Following a relegation clause within their contracts, the employment of Jose Morais, Dimas Teixeira and Joao Cunha has been terminated with immediate effect.

"Barnsley Football Club would like to place on record their thanks to Jose, Dimas and Joao for their efforts whilst in charge of the first team."

Morais worked under Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea.
