Atletico Madrid held by Celta Vigo

Atletico held by Celta Vigo

Atletico Madrid have missed the chance to go top of the La Liga table following a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo this evening.

The hosts created the first chance of the match when Tiago latched onto a cross inside the six-yard box, but he could only place his effort wide of the post.

It was Celta Vigo who took the lead in the 19th minute when a long ball into the box from Carles Planas was flicked past the keeper by Pablo Hernandez.

Antoine Griezmann almost drew the hosts level two minutes later, but his header was saved by Sergio Alvarez.

Atletico did manage to get back on level terms just past the half-hour mark as Miranda met Koke's free kick at the front post to guide the ball into the net.

They scored their second of the match 10 minutes later when Diego Godin rose highest to head in Gabi's corner.

Immediately after the break, Celta came close to drawing level when Hugo Mallo was slipped into the box, before seeing his powerful strike saved by Miguel Angel Moya.

The visitors were then awarded a penalty when Planas was brought down inside the box by Miranda, and Nolito made no mistake with a confident finish from the spot.

On the hour-mark, Atletico thought that they had retaken the lead when Raul Jimenez headed in, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Jimenez then saw a close-range effort saved by Alvarez, before an overhit cross from Koke that looked bound for the top corner forced the keeper to tip the ball over the bar.

In the final minute, Alvarez produced another save as he kept out Tiago's header, and it proved to be the final chance of the match as the visitors held on to claim a point.
