Martin Zubimendi has officially become one of Arsenal's latest summer additions. The 26-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year deal, fulfilling the long-standing wish of manager Mikel Arteta, who had been keen to bring him to the Emirates Stadium since the summer 2024 transfer window.
Arteta played a key role in securing the signing, having quickly built a strong relationship with Zubimendi. The Spaniard acknowledged this connection during a press conference in Singapore, where he openly praised the Arsenal boss.
"I do not know what he saw in me, but I see him as one of the best coaches in Europe. I wanted a top-quality coach after leaving Real Sociedad, and I believe I have found that. Even in just a few days, I have already seen how meticulous he is in every aspect of the game," he said.
Zubimendi on his role and choice to join Arsenal
Speculation surrounding Zubimendi's future gained momentum following Euro 2024. He attracted interest from several major European clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City, Barcelona, Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Liverpool were reportedly prepared to pay €60m (approximately £50.5m) to sign him in mid-2024, but Zubimendi opted to remain at Real Sociedad at the time.
"I wanted to stay. When offers come in, the first question is whether you want to leave — and it was not the right moment," he explained.
Since then, Arsenal have intensified their efforts to convince him to join this summer. In addition to multiple phone conversations with Arteta, the club's youthful and ambitious squad and a playing style that "suits" him all contributed to his decision.
Zubimendi is expected to feature alongside Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice in a traditional 4-3-3 formation. Known in La Liga for his accurate passing, tactical discipline and ball recoveries, he is expected to bring balance and composure to the midfield.
"Playing in this role, I will aim to bring balance and be the passing outlet that defines my game. I am also certain he (Arteta) will ask me to take on new responsibilities."
Arteta, in turn, has been impressed by Zubimendi's impact early on.
"Seeing him every day, the way he absorbs information and applies it on the pitch — it is impressive," said the Arsenal manager.
