Preview: Sheffield Wednesday vs. Arsenal

Sports Mole previews the League Cup action as Sheffield Wednesday play host to Arsenal.

Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday welcome the visit of Arsenal in the League Cup on Tuesday night, as the Owls aim to build from their previous victory over Newcastle United in the competition.

As for the Gunners, they will be seeking to carry on some impressive form of late that has already seen them beat Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Everton.

Following a difficult start to the new Championship campaign, Wednesday have managed to stop the rot and now find themselves unbeaten in their last seven fixtures in the league.

Out of those seven contests, the Owls have also managed to bag four victories that have helped to move them into ninth spot in the standings.

Wednesday come into the contest having just beaten Rotherham United in the league, while they have managed to put together a convincing run in the Cup too.

Starting their League Cup campaign in August, the Owls produced efficient victories over both Mansfield Town and Oxford United, before pulling off a giant-killing win over hosts Newcastle United at St James' Park.

That victory has established a standout fixture at home to Arsenal and the club's fans will be delighted at the prospect of taking on an in-form Gunners side at Hillsborough

Cup runs can often prove financially important for teams outside of the Premier League, and the Owls will be hoping that they can produce some magic to see their impressive run go on a little longer.

Arsenal

Wenger's charges have produced a remarkable run in recent weeks that has seen them claim four wins from four against some top opposition both in the Premier League and the Champions League.

Building from an impressive destruction of United, the Gunners then went on to produce a thrilling 2-0 home victory over Bayern in order to keep their European hopes alive.

After producing those two results, an Arsenal of old might well have slipped up against Everton, but Wenger's men produced another efficient showing to ensure that they grabbed a 2-1 win at home.

If they are able to continue mounting a sustained run at the Premier League title, the League Cup might become less of a concern for the Gunners, but this fixture should provide the London club with a chance to keep their momentum going after a collection of important results.

Premier League sides can often come unstuck away from home in the Cup, and Wenger will doubtless be keen to assert some authority in the contest as his side aim to show that they can still provide a challenge on all fronts throughout the season.

Team News

Wednesday announced on Tuesday that they had agreed a deal to loan Norwich City striker Gary Hooper, with the frontman going straight into the club's squad for the visit of Arsenal.

Coach Carlos Carvalhal will have a number of decisions to make given that Michael Turner, Alex Lopez, Marco Matias and Modou Sougou are all out of action.

Petr Cech should start for Arsenal in goal given the shoulder injury to second stopper David Ospina.

The Gunners could hand a start to defender Per Mertesacker who is available after illness, but Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Danny Welbeck and Tomas Rosicky still remained sidelined.

Sheffield Wednesday possible starting lineup:
Westwood; Hutchinson, Loovens, Lees, Joao; Lee, Hunt, Wallace, Pudil, Bananan; Forestieri

Arsenal possible starting lineup:
Cech; Debuchy, Mertesacker, Chambers, Gibbs; Coquelin, Flamini; Campbell, Iwobi, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Giroud

Head To Head

These sides have not met competitively for the best part of 15 years since a Premier League fixture that was drawn 3-3 in May 2000. Over their last six meetings, which stretch back to 1997, Wednesday have an impressive record against the Gunners, whom they have beaten twice amid two losses and two draws.

We say: Sheffield Wednesday 0-3 Arsenal

Wednesday have put together some positive results to get this far in the competition and they will be keen to have a real go at the visitors. Arsenal, however, have beaten United, Munich and Everton in recent fixtures and they will be hoping that they can bring their brand of incisive football to Hillsborough on Tuesday.
