Jack Wilshere 'honoured' to captain Arsenal, gives update on ankle injury

Wilshere 'honoured' to captain Arsenal

Midfielder Jack Wilshere has admitted that he was 'honoured' to captain Arsenal against Chelsea on Wednesday night before he was substituted through injury.

Despite less than six months remaining on his contract, Wilshere has worked his way back into the first-team fold at the Emirates Stadium and was handed the armband for the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final with his side's London rivals at Stamford Bridge.

Wilshere is hopeful that an ankle problem sustained in the second half is "not too bad", but says that he was proud to have been given extra responsibility by manager Arsene Wenger.

On Instagram, the 25-year-old said: "What an honour to be given the armband tonight! Enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks to the fans you were fantastic tonight as always!

"Hope my injury is not to bad and I'm back as soon as possible."

The match ended in a goalless draw, with the second leg taking place on January 23.
