Messi scores record-breaking goal in Argentina win

Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the first South American player to reach 80 international goals as he found the net against Uruguay on Monday.

The Paris Saint-Germain star put his nation ahead in the 38th minute, before Rodrigo De Paul and Lautaro Martinez went on to get on the scoresheet in a comfortable 3-0 victory in World Cup 2022 Qualifying action.

Such a goal saw him become the first player from the continent to reach the tally of 80, after he surpassed Brazil legend Pele's record of 77 goals with a hat-trick against Bolivia in September.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, the 34-year-old said: "We played a great game. Everything worked out perfectly. Uruguay wait for you and they generate danger. Once we got the first goal we started to find space and the goals appeared."

Messi made his international debut in 2005, and posted his first Argentina goal in the following year, with the captain now standing as the most capped player in his country's history, having featured 155 times to date.
