Lionel Messi looking to equal Argentina World Cup goalscoring record

Lionel Messi is looking to equal Argentina's World Cup goalscoring record when they face Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Messi led the way for his country in the round of 16 as he opened the scoring in the 2-1 win against Australia, with Manchester City's Julian Alvarez also getting on the scoresheet.

Messi is now looking to equal Gabriel Batistuta's record at the tournament, following his first goal in a knockout stages of a World Cup last time out.

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has nine goals across five tournaments, and is looking to match and surpass Batistuta's national record of 10 goals.

Currently, the 35-year-old is tied in second in the race for the Golden Boot behind Kylian Mbappe, having scored against Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Australia so far.

The last time Messi faced the Netherlands in a competitive game for his country was in the semi-final of 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where his country triumphed on penalties following a tight goalless draw.
