Newcastle hold Anzhi to draw

Newcastle United have held Anzhi Makhachkala to a goalless draw in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie in Russia.

The only shot on target in an uneventful first half came on 40 minutes when Anzhi striker Samuel Eto'o's long-range effort was fumbled away by Rob Elliot.

The Newcastle goalkeeper was called into action again on the hour as he pushed another Eto'o drive around the post.

Newcastle had a chance to take the lead soon after, but Hatem Ben Arfa's casual shot was saved before Vurnon Anita blasted over from 30 yards.

The hosts had a late opportunity to snatch a winner, only for Elliot to gather Eto's weak attempt at goal.
