Korean fencer loses to China in bronze medal match

A brave effort from Korean fencer Lam Shin could not earn her a medal as China claimed bronze in the women's individual epee.

Shin's semi-final defeat had been shrouded in controversy, after a formal appeal by the Koreans over the referee's decision resulted in an hour-long delay.

Shin had to try to pull herself together to face world number one Yujie Sun in the bronze medal match on just ten minutes' notice.

The Korean made a bold start, landing the first hit and forcing her Chinese opponent to make mistakes.

Sun fought back, with the match finely poised at 9-9 going into the third and final period.

The Korean ultimately ran out of steam and despite her best efforts lost the bronze medal match 15-11.
