Joe Root: 'Alastair Cook has backing of entire England squad'

Joe Roots backs Alastair Cook to lead England to a one-day series victory over India.

England batsman Joe Root has said that the entire England squad believe that Alastair Cook is the right man to lead them in the one-day series against India.

England will face India in Cardiff today after the opening match was called off due to heavy rain on Monday.

Shortly after a 3-1 series win over India in the five-day format, Cook announced his intention to be "massively involved" in the 50-over games, and Root has said that he is the right man to lead his teammates.

"He's our leader in one-day cricket as well as Tests," Root told BBC Sport. He's done well over a number of years, and we all back him.

"I think he complements people like Alex Hales - hopefully that can be shown in this series.

"We've also got guys such as Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler down the order who, as you've seen, can win games on their own. We're in a good place, and this series will be a good judge of that."

Root was in scintillating form against India in the Test matches, and was the series' top-scorer with 518 runs.
