Paul Farbrace: 'One-day success has widened talent pool ahead of the Ashes'

Paul Farbrace admits that England's one-day series win over New Zealand has opened the door for several players to come into contention for the Ashes.

Paul Farbrace has revealed that England's triumph over New Zealand in their one-day series has opened the door for players to come into contention for the Ashes.

Jonny Bairstow scored a match-winning 83 to guide the Three Lions to a three-wicket victory over the Kiwis by the Duckworth-Lewis method at Durham to secure a 3-2 win in the series.

Farbrace has admitted that Bairstow, along with Adil Rashid, could leave themselves open for selection this summer, while one-day skipper Eoin Morgan could also make a return to the Test side, after a four-year absence.

He told reporters: "It's widened our pool of players. For the guys that have played in this series, I would like to think they're going away saying, 'I want more of that'. County cricketers should realise that there is an opportunity to play for England now.

"Not going to Spain doesn't rule him [Rashid] out of playing Test cricket this summer. That's 100% certain. The thought was that if there was a four-day game for Rash to play, which there is, it would be a good opportunity for him to go back. So if he is then needed during the Ashes, he's ready.

"There's no reason why Morgan can't play Test cricket. He's a fantastic player. He'd be the first to say he had a disappointing World Cup, and he's come back and played absolutely brilliantly through this series."

The first Ashes Test begins on July 8 at Sophia Gardens.
