Ireland's Michael O'Reilly heads directly to final after Russian fails medical

O'Reilly into final as Russian fails medical

Ireland's Michael O'Reilly has been handed a gold medal lifeline after semi-final opponent Maxim Koptyakov failed a medical before their bout.

Russian Koptyakov failed to recover from a cut, meaning that O'Reilly will head straight into the middleweight gold-medal fight.

Baku 2015 boxing tournament manager Paul Porter confirmed: "The Russian boxer failed to complete his medical examination because of his cut eye and that gives the Irish boxer a walkover."

O'Reilly, 22, will now face the winner of the other middleweight semi-final between Azerbaijani Xaybula Musalov and Hungary's Zoltan Harcsa.
