Zoltan Harcsa scrapes past Jose Espinoza Mena

Zoltan Harcsa of Hungary records a three-point victory over Venezuela's Jose Espinoza Mena.

Zoltan Harcsa of Hungary has overcome tough Venezuelan Jose Espinoza Mena in an entertaining Olympic middleweight encounter.

Harcsa had worked himself into a one-point advantage after the opening three minutes, but the Venezuelan hit back in the second with some clever long-range boxing.

Mena adopted hit-and-move tactics and dragged himself level as the bout entered the concluding chapter.

A thunderous left hand from Mena sent Harcsa crashing to the canvas in the final round, but the referee did not score it as a knockdown.

That prompted Mena to attack and the Hungarian was struggling to regain a toehold in the contest. Another shot from Mena caught Harcsa flush late as the bout drew to a close.

Despite Mena's good work, the judges awarded Harcsa a 16-13 decision.
