Gregg Popovich: 'We don't set ourselves goals for the season'

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich insists that his side do not set goals for themselves despite claiming the NBA championship last season.

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has suggested that his side will not set themselves goals ahead of the new season.

The Spurs adopted the same philosophy last time out as they romped to the title with an emphatic playoff-final win over the Miami Heat.

"Just to be clear, we've never had any goals whatsoever in the sense of winning `X' number of games or this year is our year to win a championship," Popovich told reporters at the team's media day.

"All we've said is that we want to be the best team we can be at playoff time and that starts with the very first practice and it's a building block sort of thing."

The Spurs get their title defence underway against the Dallas Mavericks on October 28.
