Report: Dallas Cowboys restructure Tony Romo contract

The Dallas Cowboys have restructured quarterback Tony Romo's contract to bring them closer to the salary cap, according to reports.

Romo signed a six-year extension to his contract last year worth $108m (£64.8m), $55m (£33m) of which was guaranteed, while the restructured deal will see $12.5m (£7.5m) of Romo's $13.5m (£8.1m) base salary converted into a signing-on bonus.

That will free up $10m (£6m) in space for the Cowboys, leaving them less than $1m (£600,000) over the salary cap after they finalise restructured contracts for Sean Lee and Orlando Scandrick as well.

It is understood that Dallas do not plan to change any more deals, although they have yet to decide upon the futures of Pro Bowlers DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin.

Romo is currently undergoing rehab from surgery in December but is not expected to miss any of the team's off-season programme, which begins next month.
