Andy Murray has paid tribute to Rafael Nadal, saying that beating the Spaniard on clay in "one of the toughest things to do".
The Scot beat the nine-time French Open champion to win his second clay-court title in six days by claiming the Madrid Masters crown.
However, Murray is relieved that he was able to overcome the 'King of Clay', despite breaking Nadal on three occasions in the final.
Speaking on court after his victory, he said: "It was an incredible atmosphere and it's always a pleasure to play in front of these people.
"To play Rafa in Spain is always extremely tough. But this is the reason why we play, for these matches.
"One of the toughest things to do is beat Rafa on clay, and I'm glad I was able to do it today."
Murray had never beaten Nadal in a clay-court final prior to his Madrid Masters win.
