Heather Watson bows out in second round at Indian Wells

British number two Heather Watson loses in three sets to 32nd seed Monica Niculescu in the second round at Indian Wells.

Heather Watson has suffered a second-round defeat in Indian Wells after losing in three sets to Monica Niculescu.

The British number two entered the tournament on the back of winning the title in Monterrey last weekend, and she had hoped to repeat last year's fourth-round appearance in the American event.

However, in a contest that included 15 breaks of serve, Watson lost 6-4 2-6 6-2 to the Romanian, who is number 34 in the world rankings.

On Saturday, Johanna Konta faces Madison Brengle, whom she has not defeated in any of their three previous meetings.

In the men's draw, Andy Murray - who is competing at Indian Wells off the back of helping Great Britain to a Davis Cup win over Japan - will take on Spain's Marcel Granollers.
