Michael Phelps to return to competition following drink-driving suspension

Michael Phelps confirms that he will take part in the Arena Pro Swim Series at Mesa next week.

Swimming legend Michael Phelps has confirmed that he will return to competition next week in Arizona after serving a drink-driving ban.

The 29-year-old American will take part in the Arena Pro Swim Series at Mesa following the completion of his six-month suspension.

"My suspension is finally up! Time to get back in the pool and race again! Looking forward to Mesa," he wrote on Twitter.

Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, was handed the ban after being stopped by police for travelling at 84mph in a 45mph zone in Baltimore, Maryland, last September.

He later pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol in exchange for 18 months' probation and a one-year suspended prison term.

The Arena Pro Swim Series takes places between April 15 and April 18.
