Sunderland's Danny Graham donates money to help cover footballer's surgery

Sunderland striker Danny Graham gives more than £2,000 to Gateshead player JJ O'Donnell for the midfielder to undergo surgery on a rare foot condition.

Sunderland striker Danny Graham has donated money to Gateshead midfielder JJ O'Donnell to help cover the cost of his surgery.

The Conference player suffers from a rare foot condition called sesamoiditis, and Graham added £2,690 to a fund that also included contributions from Gateshead supporters.

After receiving the donation from Graham, O'Donnell tweeted: "I'm not singling Danny out as, without everybody donating, I wouldn't have ever reached my target, but a donation like that has left me speechless.

"I've never met Danny but for him to put an astronomical amount like that towards a fund of a lad who he doesn't know speaks volumes of what a true gentleman he is. Premier League players take a lot of stick about being role models but this shows just how much of a role model someone can be.

"I'm truly humbled and forever thankful. Hopefully I'm able to meet Danny and thank him personally for an incredible thing to do."

The original target from fans was to raise £5,000, but Graham's contribution has pushed the total beyond £7,000.
