Villarreal extend winless run with draw at Getafe

Villarreal make it five games without a win in La Liga as they are held to a 1-1 draw at Getafe.

Villarreal have extended their winless run in La Liga to five matches with a 1-1 draw at Getafe.

Both sides had opportunities during a lively opening, but Pedro Leon narrowly missed with a free kick before Ikechukwu Uche nodded wide from a corner at the other end.

Getafe were on the attack again soon after as Diego Castro drove into the box, only to see his low effort blocked by Eric Bailly.

Chances were few and far between during the remainder of the first half, though the visitors almost broke the deadlock late on as Gerard Moreno's quick feet allowed him to get a shot away on the edge of the box. However, the forward's strike went inches off target.

Villarreal finally opened the scoring from the penalty spot six minutes into the second half after Uche was fouled by Medhi Lacen. The Nigerian dusted himself down before hammering the ball home for his eighth goal of the season.

However, Getafe earned themselves a share of the spoils with 64 minutes on the clock as Castro rose highest inside the box to head in Roberto Lago's cross.

The hosts looked the more likely to find a winner during the final 20 minutes, but Emiliano Buendia and Alvaro Vazquez both squandered half-chances in front of goal.
