Asier Illarramendi rejects Athletic Bilbao switch?

Real Madrid reportedly accept a bid from Athletic Bilbao for Asier Illarramendi, but the midfielder decides to stay in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi has reportedly turned down the chance to join Athletic Bilbao.

The 24-year-old, who arrived at the Bernabeu in 2013 from Bilbao's fierce rivals Real Sociedad, has struggled to establish himself within Carlo Ancelotti's starting lineup.

As a result, Los Blancos were prepared to sell the former Spanish youth international this winter to Bilbao for £19m, according to AS.

However, the report adds that Illarramendi has rejected that opportunity, having instead opted to fight for his place.

It is believed that the defensive midfielder has decided to assess his options in the summer, with the Premier League a potential destination.
