A tight game in the French capital was still goalless when Dani Carvajal brought Kylian Mbappe down inside the area on the hour mark, prompting referee Daniele Orsato to point to the spot.
Messi stepped up to take the resultant penalty ahead of Mbappe, looking to add to his 125 Champions League goals - five of which have come in as many games for PSG in this season's competition.
However, the Argentine saw his spot kick saved by Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois in what could prove to be a pivotal moment in the tie.
