Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar undergoes successful surgery on the ankle injury that he sustained last month.

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that Neymar has undergone successful ankle surgery.

The Brazil international was stretchered off in the second half of last month's 4-3 victory over Lille after sustaining an ankle injury.

Initial diagnosis suggested that the injury was not too serious, and the 31-year-old would be sidelined for three to four weeks.

However, upon further assessment, it was revealed that Neymar had suffered ligament damage to his right ankle and would require surgery as a result.

In a previous statement, PSG said: "Neymar has sustained a number of instances of instability in his right ankle in recent years.

"Following his latest sprain on 20 February, the Paris Saint-Germain medical staff recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid a major risk of recurrence.

"All the experts consulted have confirmed this necessity. The surgery will be performed in the next few days at the ASPETAR hospital in Doha. It will take three to four months before he can return to training with the team."

The reigning French champions have now provided an update to disclose that Neymar has undergone successful surgery on his ankle.

The statement read: "Neymar was successfully operated on late this morning at the Aspetar Hospital in Doha by Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar, Pr. Pieter d'Hooghe and Pr. James Calder. The player will now follow a protocol of rest and treatment."

Neymar has struggled with ankle problems throughout his career, including at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The forward picked up an ankle injury in Brazil's 2-0 win over Serbia in their opening group game, which subsequently kept him out of matches against Switzerland and Cameroon.

With his season now over, Neymar will end the 2022-23 campaign with 18 goals and 17 assists in 29 competitive games.

In total, the Brazilian has made 173 appearances across for PSG, scoring 118 goals and providing 77 assists.

Without Neymar's presence, PSG were knocked out of the last-16 of the Champions League by Bayern Munich in midweek, leaving them to focus on their league campaign.

The Parisians are currently eight points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table ahead of Saturday's away meeting with Brest.
