Oribe Peralta's goal earns Mexico a 1-0 win over Switzerland and top spot in Group B, while their opponents crash out of the tournament.

A single goal from Oribe Peralta was enough to earn Mexico a 1-0 victory over Switzerland at the Millennium Stadium and secure their passage into the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games.

Mexico progress as Group B winners, while the result means that Switzerland exit the competition at the pool stage.

Knowing that victory was needed, Switzerland were the more attacking side and threatened to open the deadlock on several occasions during the early stages.

Admir Mehmedi and Steven Zuber both sent efforts off target during the opening quarter-of-an-hour, while Innocent Emeghara was guilty of missing their best chance in the latter stages of the first period.

However, a returning Giovani dos Santos nearly sent Mexico into the break ahead when his free kick late in the first half went narrowly wide of the post.

Opportunities were more limited in the second half, but Mexico were able to take one of a handful when it came around as Peralta converted the game's solitary goal on 68 minutes.

Mexico will return to action for the quarter-finals on August 4.
