Bournemouth will be aiming to end the longest winless run in English football history when they face Manchester City on Saturday.

Bournemouth will look to end the longest winless run in English Football League history when they play host to Manchester City on Saturday.

The Cherries halted a nine-game winless run in all competitions with a narrow 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.

Marcus Tavernier's 49th-minute strike proved enough to secure all three points, which moved the Cherries out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The result represented Bournemouth's first victory since Gary O'Neil was named permanent manager at the end of November following a spell as interim boss.

The Cherries will now be aiming to claim their first home victory since November 12, but if they are to claim a surprise victory over Man City then they will need to end the longest winless run against a specific opponent in English football history.

Bournemouth have never beaten the Citizens in 17 previous league meetings, with 15 of those matches ending in defeat.

O'Neil will also be concerned by the fact that Man City have won all 11 Premier League games against Bournemouth, representing the best 100% win record in the league's history.

When the two sides met in August, Pep Guardiola's side cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden all found the net in the first half, before a Jefferson Lerma own goal in the second period compounded Bournemouth's miserable afternoon.

Meanwhile, Saturday's meeting will be the first time Bournemouth have welcomed Man City to the Vitality Stadium since August 2019.

On that occasion, a Harry Wilson strike could not prevent the Cherries from falling to a 3-1 defeat following a Sergio Aguero brace and a Raheem Sterling strike.

If Bournemouth are to claim consecutive victories within the same Premier League season for the first time since February 2020 then they will need to improve in the final third.

No side has scored fewer goals since the World Cup break than the Cherries, who have only found the net on three occasions in their last eight league games.

They will face a Man City side who have failed to win their last two competitive games after playing out consecutive 1-1 draws against Nottingham Forest and RB Leipzig in the Premier League and Champions League respectively.
