How Manchester City could line up against Burnley

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for Wednesday night's EFL Cup fourth round tie with Burnley at Turf Moor.

Manchester City will be looking for a quick response to their heavy home defeat at the hands of Leicester City when they face Burnley at Turf Moor in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Man City shipped five goals for the first time at the Etihad Stadium, including three for Jamie Vardy and three penalties as the former champions suffered an early blow to their hopes of regaining the title.

The EFL Cup has provided a steady source of silverware in recent years, though, with Man City lifting this trophy five times in the last seven years including the last three seasons in a row.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Pep Guardiola could line his side up for the contest.

Changes are always expected for the bigger clubs in the EFL Cup, but even more so with such a crammed fixture schedule this season.

Guardiola complained of only having 13 fit senior players to pick from at the weekend and his options have barely improved for this game, although a number of youngsters did impress in the last round and could have earned another chance in the first team.

Liam Delap headlines that group after his goal against Bournemouth and substitute appearance at the weekend, and with Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero still sidelined the striker is set to lead the line.

Zack Steffen, Adrian Bernabe, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Tommy Doyle are among the other youngsters in contention to feature on Wednesday night.

One player who could be ready to return is Aymeric Laporte after he was left on the bench at the weekend as Guardiola continues to practice caution over his fitness following a positive coronavirus test.

John Stones was also absent for fitness reasons at the weekend and he remains doubtful for this one.

Ilkay Gundogan is still in isolation after a positive coronavirus test of his own, while Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva are sidelined until after next month's international break.

Man City are expected to confirm the arrival of Ruben Dias before this match, with Nicolas Otamendi moving in the opposite direction, but the inbound centre-back is unlikely to be ready in time to feature.
