Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne surprised to be given striker role

Kevin De Bruyne admits that he was surprised to be moved into a striker role during Manchester City's win over Sevilla in the Champions League.

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has admitted that he was surprised to be handed the role of striker during his side's Champions League win over Sevilla on Wednesday night.

The Belgium international moved into the position when Wilfried Bony was substituted in the 76th minute with the game at 1-1.

Defensive midfielder Fernando was brought on to replace Bony, resulting in De Bruyne vacating his No.10 role and moving up front where he scored the winner in injury time.

"I never played so much in my life as a striker, to be honest," Goal.com quotes De Bruyne as saying. "Obviously we don't have so many strikers at the moment and if the manager asks me to play there I will try.

"I'm a different type of a player, [operating] in the space and these type of things. Maybe the manager thought that could cause a little bit of trouble for them."

De Bruyne signed for the former Premier League champions for a reported £55m fee from Wolfsburg in the summer.
