Liverpool move top of Premier League

Liverpool move to first position in the Premier League following a 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Liverpool have moved to the top of the Premier League thanks to a 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

The home side led inside two minutes when Younes Kaboul turned a low Glen Johnson cross into his own net from close range. Spurs continued to wobble as Luis Suarez advanced into the box four minutes later, but Kaboul managed to make a last-ditch challenge.

Suarez turned provider for Daniel Sturridge after 10 minutes, but the England international could not meet a cross from the Premier League's leading scorer.

The home side had another half-chance after 16 minutes when Philippe Coutinho met a high ball on the edge of the box, but his effort was always moving wide of the post.

Liverpool had their second after 25 minutes, however, when Suarez capitalised on a mistake from Kaboul before driving into the box and finishing into the bottom corner.

Christian Eriksen threatened for Spurs moments later, but his powerful effort was blocked inside the box. Roberto Soldado, meanwhile, brought a smart stop from Simon Mignolet after 40 minutes in Spurs' best chance of the half.

Suarez had a golden opportunity to register his second two minutes later, but somehow Hugo Lloris kept the forward's header out from close range following another poor piece of defending from the away side.

Jordan Henderson had a clear chance to score Liverpool's third after 53 minutes following bright work from Raheem Sterling, but the England international could only fire his effort high and wide of the crossbar from inside the box.

The home side had their third moments later, however, when Coutinho arrowed one into the bottom corner from distance.

Nacer Chadli came close after 64 minutes when the Belgian found some space inside the box, but his effort was high and wide of the crossbar as the home side continued to dominate proceedings.

Sturridge had another half-chance for the home side after 68 minutes, but Lloris was on hand to make the save following another mix-up in the Spurs back four. Liverpool had their fourth 15 minutes from time, however, when Henderson's free kick found its way into the bottom corner.

Spurs had a couple of token efforts in the latter stages from Eriksen, but could not open their tally as their poor record against the top four this season continued.
